Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Implications for social services

America a few years back is not the same one now regarding the type of treatment people living with disabilities receive. The introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA has had a substantial positive impact on social services to help in reducing discrimination in any sector of society. It has successfully seen the elevation of such people to a level equal to any other person that does not require extra attention or assistance to either see or move around. The social services department faced tremendous changes since it is the central part of the society where these people experienced a hindrance in search of essential services like employment and health care. All social policies are operational with full legislations to benefit Americans living disabilities in the following ways. On other hand, ADA provide also WCAG or Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as a set of requirements that is the international system of coding standards.

The ADA restricts against any type of discrimination against employees based on any form of disability. Employment opportunities should be equal to all citizens since they have equal rights despite their abilities. People living with disabilities have to be fully included in all in public sectors so as be fruitful and participate in building the country. All employers get prohibited from subjecting such people to types of work they are not able to perform. In such a case, proper measurements should be in place to facilitate them so that they can also feel like part of the community by being productive. Other work-related actions like hiring, firing, and job promotions should be done on an all equal basis and not on the focus of an employee’s disability. The Act has led to the formation of labor unions that fight for equal opportunities for these people in the employment industry. Any form of discrimination is immediately reported to them by an employee, and they take the matter to court.

Another department offering social services that felt the impact of the ADA is the transportation industry. Whether public or private, transport organizations are not allowed to discriminate disabled people by limiting their transportation modes to people who don’t have special needs. The kind of services rendered should be clear and accessible to all people. For instance, there should be provision for braille or audio content for the blind. Also, they should set in place assisting equipment for facilitating movement for disabled people to allow them to maneuver without difficulty. All the staff should go through proper training for them to help any disabled people with ease. There should be the provision of adequate time for such people to either board or exit vehicles, and in case they require assistance, it should get provided at no extra cost. Furthermore, all types of transport must have at least one priority seat for accommodating people with disabilities at no charges as well.

The Act prohibits further discrimination in any place offering public accommodation like movie theatres, restaurants, daycare facilities, and schools. Such institutions have to be open to allow anyone to visit or enroll with special equipment set in place for ease of accessibility. Furthermore, the specific services should not be discriminatory but equal to all citizens. Institutions like schools and colleges should offer admission chances to disabled people for as long they are qualified. Also, the operations of schools have to allow for the incorporation of unique equipment that will make their stay comfortable for them to focus on their learning. It means any student with a disability has the right to join any institution they chose with the right qualifications and, in the end, get to learn just like a student with no special needs.

The Americans with Disability Act Of 1900 has streamlined the society to allow for accommodation of people with disabilities without exposure to discrimination. It fights against denying such people the opportunities that are free to other people. Its emphasis is that disabled people have equal rights, just like the rest of the community.
